Hindu Law

Hindu Law is a body of personal laws that applies to Hindus in India, covering everyday life matters such as marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and family maintenance. Unlike a standard rulebook, it isn't one single code — it grew out of ancient religious texts like the Vedas, Smritis, and Dharmashastras, along with centuries of social customs and traditions. In India, different communities follow their own personal laws. Just as Muslims follow Muslim Personal Law and Christians follow Christian Law for matters like marriage and inheritance, Hindus are governed by Hindu Law for these same personal affairs.
